Innovation for extreme – RM in hard places
Climbing
January 2010

On the 28th April 2010, Econolyst Managing director Dr Phil Reeves will address the 8th annual Innovation for Extremes conference at the Lancaster University management school.

The conference is focused on technological innovations that will impact on the outdoor industry.

Phil will be discussing how Rapid Manufacturing can be used to reduce the carbon footprint and increase the sustainability of products used in the outdoors.

PRESENTATION TITLE
"which way does your carbon footprint face? - Looking up and down the supply chain for long term sustainability"

ABSTRACT
In this presentation Dr Phil Reeves will look at the concept of lifecycle carbon foot printing, and how different material and manufacturing choices impact on product design, end of life recycling and reuse.

Phil will look at the effects of product design on manufacturing, life cycle and end of first life CO2, and how the use of potentially inefficiency manufacturing processes can be offset significantly by minimizing raw material consumption.

This presentation will look at a number of traditional manufacturing processes for polymeric and metallic components, such as molding, machining and casting. It will then look at emerging manufacturing processes such as Rapid Manufacturing and Metal Injection Moulding. The presentation will conclude by looking into the economics of sustainable manufacturing using new and emerging processes, and the long term implications of increasing material and energy costs, carbon taxation and ethical consumerism.
